A Witten ice club founded in 1936

IJsvereniging Witten was founded in 1936. After a dormant period caused by ice-free winters, the club was taken up again in the early 1980s. In 1985 it again had a full board and things were tackled rigorously: a well 90 metres deep was drilled, and the members built a new canteen themselves.

The rink is filled with water from the Witterveld when enough rain falls in autumn. To make that possible a dam was built in a nearby drainage ditch some forty years ago, and when its wooden structure rotted, soldiers on the Anherst army exercise built a new one as practice.

A military range lies next to the rink, and the neighbours have proved useful: after heavy snow in an ice period, a platoon of soldiers was ready within a quarter of an hour to sweep the track clean.
