Open-air artificial ice at the Nigglweg, in use since 1976
Würzburg's rink at the Nigglweg has offered artificial ice under the open sky since 1976, which changed the city's ice sport at a stroke: before that, mild winters meant natural ice was sprayed on open ground such as tennis courts only during longer cold spells. The cooling plant dates from 1978, and its waste heat warms an outdoor pool of the Nautiland.
The Würzburger Eis- und Rollsport-Verein was founded on 30 October 1979. With no roof, training depends on the weather, and skaters go out in wind, snow or rain. The club's ice dance pair Petra Born and Rainer Schönborn won three German titles and a European bronze medal between 1983 and 1985.
In October 2013 a leak in the 35-year-old cooling pipe released ammonia and injured eleven people. In 2017-18 the rink was extensively renovated and officially reopened on 30 November 2018.
