Volunteer-run natural-ice rink of a club active since 1876

IJsvereniging Zuidwolde was already active in 1876, skating then on the frozen Boterdiep. Over the years the club moved to the Noorderhoogebrug and to the former brickworks, had legendary winters in the 1950s and 1960s, and has been at its present site since the early 1980s.

Volunteers get up early to clear snow and make the ice safe, and the club grew into a meeting place for the two villages. When hard frost comes, its green-and-white flag goes up in Zuidwolde and Noordwolde.

The club turned 150 in 2026. At its anniversary celebration on 21 March 2026 it was surprised with a Koninklijke Erepenning, a royal medal of honour. The day began at ten in the morning with a clothes swap and children's crafts and included a 40-question quiz about the club. A jubilee book, Krakend ijs breekt niet, by Mark Reysoo, looks back on a century and a half of skating around the natural ice and the clubhouse, and every resident of Zuidwolde and Noordwolde received a copy.
