Opened in 1956 for Canadian air-force hockey

The ICE-ARENA opened in January 1956 as the Peter Cunningham Memorial ICE-ARENA, named after a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and hockey player who was killed in a flying exercise in 1954. Gehlen Bau of Kaiserslautern built it, with about 20 km of cooling pipe including a curling lane, and the concrete slab was laid without gaps so that roller skaters could use it in summer.

Canadian airmen brought ice hockey to the town in the 1950s, and the hall was the home of the RCAF Flyers and later the 3 Wing Flyers. Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler, European and world figure-skating champions, trained here. When the US Air Force took over the base, its commander agreed that the arena would stay open to the public. The Cunningham sign hung over the entrance from 1956 until a renovation in 1998, and the city of Zweibrücken owned the arena from 1993.

Today the 26 by 60 metre ice is the home venue of the EHC Zweibrücken Hornets, and children and teenagers can learn figure skating here too. World of Fun Freizeitpark GmbH is the provider named in the rink's Impressum.
