A Zwolle ice club from 1939, with a clubhouse called De Ark

IJsvereniging WVF, whose name stands for Westenholte-Voorst-Frankhuis, dates itself from 15 December 1939, though races had already been held on the big kolk in the 1930s. At the founding meeting about fifty people signed up as members.

In the hard early war years skaters tucked their trouser legs into their socks, took off their jackets and raced, and in heavy frost the older members organised tours across the Mastenbroek polder to Kampen and via the Zwarte Water to Zwolle.

The clubhouse began as an open hut of three walls and a tarpaulin roof, used until 1949. A new clubhouse opened on 10 October 1959 in spite of a storm that brought the rafters down, and on 13 April 1960 it was named De Ark. The rink itself covers about three hectares.
