Klamath Basin skating on a refrigerated sheet since 2002

Skating in the Klamath Basin began outdoors in the early 1900s, when the city made a community ice rink near Moore Park on the south shore of Upper Klamath Lake. The rink closed in the 1970s because of changing climate and city budget constraints. In the 1990s Bill Collier, a local retiree and former hockey player, began to renovate the old site himself, spraying the dirt patch with water from a fire hose to make ice.

The Basin's changing weather made a consistent sheet of ice almost impossible to keep, so volunteers formed Klamath Ice Sports Inc., a not-for-profit organization, in 1999 to raise money for a refrigerated, covered rink. The Bill Collier Community Ice Arena opened in January 2002, just inside the entrance to the Running Y Ranch Resort.

In winter the arena runs a refrigerated sheet under a tensile fabric, pavilion-style roof, across a five-month season. The Klamath Falls Ice Hawks, learn-to-skate and learn-to-play hockey, figure skating and curling are all based there, and in spring and summer the arena turns to roller skating, roller hockey and street hockey.
