Built in 1997 as the Ice Zone

Deep Freeze Ice Arena opened in 1997 as the Ice Zone, constructed by Zoldan as the home of the Youngstown Phantoms. At first the building contained two community ice rinks. The Phantoms have played in the United States Hockey League, the country's top junior league, since the 2009 season, and the arena remains their official practice facility.

The building measures 90,000 square feet. Today it runs a single Olympic-sized ice rink year round, down from the two sheets it opened with, and the rest of the floor space is shared by other user groups and on-site businesses, among them the Extreme Air Trampoline Park. The arena counts more than a million visitors through its doors each year, which makes it one of the most heavily visited venues in the Youngstown area.

Ownership has changed twice. The building was sold to KSMAC in January 2017 for $1.8 million, and in a sale recorded on August 2, 2022, Deep Freeze Acquisition LLC of Bethesda, Maryland, bought it for $1.45 million. The buyer, the owner of Boardman Extreme Air, then dropped the Ice Zone name and renamed the rink Deep Freeze Ice Arena.
