A pool complex that turns to ice every winter

Kyoto Aquarena, officially a pool facility and ice skating rink in Nishikyogoku Sports Park, runs two ice rinks in winter only, from November to March. The main rink measures 60 by 30 metres and is open to skaters of any level, with room for figure skating, ice hockey and short track.

The small rink, 30 by 18 metres, has a handrail all the way round, which makes it reassuring for first-timers. The ice is resurfaced during opening hours, normally in breaks of 15 to 20 minutes.

The season starts with a Skating Thanks Festival on 31 October and 1 November, with 300 skaters in each fixed-entry session, and first-time children are welcome at one-day trial lessons. Regular public hours follow a monthly timetable that the rink updates by the 20th of each month.
