Skating under the 1920s domes of Leipzig's market hall
The anona ICEDOME skates under one of two domes of Leipzig's former wholesale market hall, known as the Kohlrabizirkus. The domes were built in 1927-29 by Dyckerhoff & Widmann in shell construction and were the largest solid domes in the world when finished, with a span of 75 metres. City planner Hubert Ritter drew the design, which originally called for three domes. The hall opened in 1930, served as a wholesale market until 1995 and is now a listed building.
Each dome measures 75 by 75 metres, stands 33 metres high and covers 5,600 square metres. In autumn 2013 the Federal Chamber of Engineers named them a historic landmark of engineering in Germany. The city bought the building in July 2021 and passed it to its development company LEVG; Eiszirkus Leipzig GmbH took over the operation in January 2023, and since 2024 the rink has carried the name anona ICEDOME.
The KSW IceFighters Leipzig play ice hockey in the hall, and the Leipziger Eissport-Club trains young players there.
