The Nagoya rink behind a Medalist manga setting, open since 1981
The Howa Minato Sports & Culture complex began on 5 July 1979 as Howa Sports Land, opened by Howa Land and Building, today's Toho Gas Real Estate Development. Its Minato ice rink followed in December 1981, and the complex took its present name on 14 May 2022.
It combines a year-round skating rink with a heated pool, a bouldering gym and culture classes. The rink was renewed in July 2011 and measures 60 by 30 metres to international standard, with 800 seats. It serves as a venue for figure skating and ice hockey competitions and for ice shows.
Figure skaters Akiko Suzuki and Sota Yamamoto are among those registered here, and the rink is said to be the model for the rink in the manga Medalist. The operator says its rink is proud of its width, brightness and smooth ice.
