Opened in 1979, owned by a non-profit since 2021

The Icehouse in Neuwied opened in 1979 and has been renovated several times since. An extension in 2014 raised its capacity to 2,100 spectators, and at home games of the ice hockey club EHC Neuwied the hall is loud and atmospheric, a feeling the club calls the Bärenhöhle.

In 2021 the future of the hall was put on a new footing: a non-profit company, Eishalle Neuwied gGmbH, bought it from its previous private owner. The EHC took a share in that company with donations and a crowdfunding campaign, and every surplus the company makes goes to youth work in ice sports in Neuwied.

The hall runs on electricity from 100 per cent hydropower, which the rink describes as a clean CO2 balance.
