Tomakomai's Hakucho Arena, the home of the Red Eagles Hokkaido since 1996
The nepia Ice Arena, long known as Hakucho Arena, opened on 29 August 1996. Tomakomai's skating association had petitioned the city council for an international-standard arena back in 1983, and the building took until the mid-1990s to finish. Its arched roof is designed after the wings of a swan, the city's bird, and the rink measures 60 by 30 metres.
Ice hockey is the arena's trade. It is the home rink of the Red Eagles Hokkaido in the Asia League, and since 2008 it has been a designated National Training Centre for hockey. Figure skater Midori Ito performed at the opening. A display room holds photographs and mementos of the Oji Eagles, and outside stands a four-and-a-half-metre steel sculpture of the goddess Nike given by the local newspaper.
The name nepia comes from a naming-rights contract renewed in April 2023. On public sessions the rink asks skaters to keep to the same direction and not to jump, spin or play tag.
