Trine University's rink since 2017

Trine University dedicated Thunder Ice Arena on September 14, 2017, the year it added men's and women's hockey as varsity sports. Drs. Rick L. and Vicki L. James gave the lead gift toward its construction, and the Dekko Foundation's $2.5 million grant supported both the building and youth sports programs. The rink itself is named the Thunder Steel Dynamics Ice Rink, in honor of the Steel Dynamics Foundation's support.

The 46,200-square-foot arena seats 700 around an NCAA-compliant rink, with varsity, club and visitors' locker rooms, weight and training rooms, a VIP lounge and a press box. Trine's NCAA Division III men's and women's teams played their inaugural season here in 2017 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, and the building also houses the university's ACHA Division II and III men's club teams, figure skating and synchronized skating.

From the start the arena was meant for the town as well as the campus: it was dedicated as home to youth and community hockey and skating programs alongside Trine's teams, and today it offers several hockey options for the public.
