Cardston's arena for its sports champion

The Charlie Cheesman Memorial Ice Arena honours the man the Town calls the most prominent sports advocate in Cardston's history, and it is dedicated to his lifetime of promoting and coaching sports in the town. Born at Stayner, Ontario, on January 26, 1891, Cheesman moved to Cardston in 1911 and opened a barber shop in the Spencer Block. From 1915 his Black and White Barber Shop in the Cahoon Hotel served as the headquarters of local sport until his death on February 8, 1954.

He managed and coached the Cardston senior baseball team from 1913, coached the Cardston Shooting Stars women's basketball team to the 1948 Dominion final against the Toronto Montgomery Maids, and chaired the provincial boxing committee for 24 years. He also visited the local hospital each week to shave and cut the hair of male patients without charge.

The building serves Cardston's skating, hockey and curling, and its ice season, from September to March, is built largely around minor hockey and figure skating.
