A single-sheet arena added in the late 1970s beside Fort Rouge's converted Loblaw's supermarket
Sam Southern Arena sits at 625 Osborne Street in Fort Rouge, on ground that belonged to the Fort Rouge Curling Club until 1956. The building next to it was a Loblaw's supermarket from the mid-1950s until 1976.
In 1977 that large modernist structure was remodelled into the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre, a multifunctional community space funded with help from the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. Supergraphics were applied to its formerly plain façade to give it a landmark quality, and not long after the conversion the arena was added to the west of the old supermarket building.
The Fort Rouge branch of the Winnipeg Public Library moved into a contemporary, tiled space at the front of the leisure centre in 1981-82, so the rink shares its re-purposed building with a neighbourhood library. The ice is a single 85-by-200-foot sheet with four change rooms.
