Winnipeg's St. James Civic Centre arena, renamed for hockey legend Ab McDonald on December 9, 2022
Ab McDonald Arena is the City of Winnipeg's St. James Civic Centre arena under a new name. On Friday, December 9, 2022, the city renamed the rink for Ab McDonald, the Winnipeg hockey legend whom Mayor Scott Gillingham called one of the true legends of hockey in Winnipeg. McDonald is remembered as one of Manitoba's great ambassadors for the sport.
The renaming came with displays. That day the city and True North Sports + Entertainment unveiled several exhibits inside the civic centre honouring McDonald's life and career, and two murals donated by True North now hang inside the arena itself.
The building is a single 85-by-200-foot sheet with a capacity of 968 and five change rooms, and it shares its site with the St. James Civic Centre Pool. The city runs its skating lessons here.
