Neighbourhood-funded 1964 arena that locals call the barn, now run by Corydon Community Centre
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
River Heights Arena opened in 1964 because a group of River Heights residents decided in the early 1960s that their community centre should have an indoor rink, and raised the money through their own fund drive. When the banks would not lend until the pledges were paid, volunteers signed personal notes at the bank so construction could go ahead. An artificial ice plant followed in 1965, and in 1978 the City of Winnipeg added the dressing rooms, offices and viewing area beside the ice.
Since 2011 the arena has belonged to Corydon Community Centre, formed when the Crescentwood, River Heights and Sir John Franklin centres amalgamated. It hosts more than 25 hockey teams a year, the Corydon Heritage Ice Federation rec hockey program and Kelvin High School hockey, and it once served as a practice rink for the Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose. Longtime users call it the barn, and it runs at about 80 per cent capacity with a waiting list.
Its old boards had shifted over the years and become a safety hazard, so the arena floor and boards were replaced in a donor-funded project.
