An NHL-size, uncovered outdoor rink in the Methow Valley, refrigerated since November 2016.
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
Winthrop Rink grew out of a volunteer project. In 1999 volunteers flooded a lot at the Red Barn Community Center to make a temporary rink, and a first matching-funds IAC/RCO grant followed in 2003, when land for a permanent rink was acquired. In 2007 a group of volunteers partnered with the Town of Winthrop to build the Winthrop Ice & Sports Rink, an NHL-regulation outdoor rink with no refrigeration and no cover.
A capital campaign led by the rink's board then added refrigeration and stretched the season into the shoulder months, and on November 18, 2016 the rink opened for the first time with refrigerated ice. It is still an NHL-sized, completely uncovered rink with the North Cascade Mountains in view, operated as a 501(c)(3).
Youth hockey teams from across the Pacific Northwest travel here for the Great Outdoors Classic. The Winthrop Wolverines youth program plays at the rink, the co-ed adult Methow Hockey League calls it home and plays for the coveted Rufus C. Finch championship trophy, and college hockey has returned with a Pac 8 Conference ACHA game.
