Volunteer-built outdoor rink in Big Sky Community Park, now a regulation-size hockey arena

The Marty Pavelich Ice Rink is Big Sky's outdoor winter gathering place, offering skating, hockey, curling and community programs in Big Sky Community Park. Big Sky Community Organization operates it, and it is the town's first regulation-size outdoor hockey arena.
Hockey came first in the early 1980s, when the Gallatin Canyon Hockey Association made a seasonal outdoor rink at Buck's T-4 Lodge; by 1987 it no longer existed. A public meeting in March 2009 showed strong interest in bringing skating back, and the Big Sky Skating and Hockey Association formed in 2010. Volunteers built the rink with used wooden dasher boards sourced from North Dakota and a homemade ice resurfacing device, and later a Zamboni arrived.
The rink is named for Marty Pavelich, a four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Detroit Red Wings and a member of hockey's Production Line, who was one of the association's founding members. In 2015 new regulation boards, paid for through community fundraising and matching support from the Resort Tax Board, made it a full-size hockey arena.
