City-owned, NHL-size sheet in South Lake Tahoe that has been skating since May 2002
Tahoe Ice Arena opened in May 2002 in South Lake Tahoe. The city of South Lake Tahoe owns the building and Tahoe Sports Entertainment manages it. By November 2021 general manager Michael Lewis had taken over operations and was reworking the rink around families and friends; he described the aim as giving people "a safe place to have the kids there and have the community feel."
The building holds a regulation NHL-size sheet. Hockey programs make it their home: the Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy, founded in 2016 by Leo Fenn, Mike Sechrist and Michael Lewis, practices out of the arena as its home rink, and the Tahoe Grizzlies Youth Hockey Organization, the travel-hockey step for players aged 6 to 18, plays out of the facility. The Lake Tahoe Lakers junior hockey team was based here from 2021 to 2024.
The ice was never fully melted and rebuilt between the 2002 opening and the summer of 2025, when the city announced a closure from August 4 through September 15 for upgrades to the arena's energy efficiency and reliability. Away from league play, staff set up a winter Festival of Lights in November 2021, and the arena runs an annual Ski Patrol and Friends Night.
