Adelaide's rink, once home to the world's first indoor ski slope
The centre opened in 1981 as the Ice Arena, with a full-size rink ringed by a speed skating track. It closed in late 1987 to build what was reported to be the world's first indoor ski slope on artificial snow, reopening in 1988 as Mt Thebarton Snow and Ice and later renamed Snowdome Adelaide. The slope's structure replaced the concentric rink with two ice surfaces, a large 56 by 26 metre rink and a smaller 30 by 15 metre one.
It closed in June 2005 because of running costs and reopened without the ski slope as IceArenA. The large ice was reopened in May 2016 with a government grant for a new refrigeration plant, and in September 2021 the arena helped launch the National Hockey Super League. It reopened in November 2023 after a change of management.
The Ice Factor Foundation and the state's ice sports associations are based here, with clubs including Adelaide Adrenaline in the AIHL.
