Olympic ice from 1932 and 1980

The Lake Placid Olympic Center puts three indoor rinks and an outdoor speed skating oval in the middle of a village that hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and again in 1980. Public skating runs on the same ice, in the 1932 Jack Shea Arena and the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.

The Jack Shea Arena was used for figure skating and ice hockey at the 1932 Games, and its ice is now networked to a new refrigeration plant and can be converted to international or NHL size. Herb Brooks Arena and the USA Rink were built for 1980; the arena staged the United States' 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union known as the Miracle on Ice, and it took the American coach's name in 2005.

Outside, the James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval is one of the few outdoor rinks of its kind left in the country. Its ice is where Eric Heiden won five Olympic gold medals in 1980, and a recent revitalization updated its refrigeration for a longer, more consistent season.
