Two NHL-size rinks, the Pond and the Puddle, built in 2003 as Northeast Michigan's first indoor arena
Northern Lights Arena was built in 2003 through community effort as Northeast Michigan's first indoor ice arena. It holds two NHL-size rinks under one roof, known as the Pond and the Puddle. The main rink seats 1,200 spectators and has an in-rink concession stand and eight private locker rooms.
A 1/8-mile rubberized walking and running track runs inside the Pond Arena. The building is managed by Alpena Rink Management LLC, made up of volunteer community members, and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit it relies on community support and volunteers to keep the facility going.
Both rinks are used for hockey, figure skating and open skating, including glow skates. The Alpena Hockey Association, Alpena Figure Skating Club, Alpena Wildcat Hockey, the Alpena Men's League, the Thunder Bay Curling Club and the Alpena 45'ers are among its main user groups, along with the Shipwreck Alley Rollers women's roller derby team. The arena's own tournament for 2026-27 is the Battle of the Bay.
