Downtown Amarillo's rink in a former auction house

A community ice rink in Amarillo had been discussed for well over a decade, but a dedicated year-round facility was an expensive, risky venture. The building that made it possible was an auction house across the street from the Civic Center, next to the Santa Fe Depot, which the city had owned since buying the depot property in 2014 and leased to the auctioneer until 2017. As the Bulls junior team was leaving town, the empty warehouse offered a possibility, and in June 2020 a year-round ice rink in the city-owned building was announced.

The Amarillo Ice Ranch opened in 2021, with a community ribbon cutting on September 13, 2021. It has 17,000 square feet of ice, with locker rooms and spectator seating.

Since opening, the rink has grown into a full club building. It coaches more than 350 kids in youth hockey and more than 100 young figure skaters at the Amarillo Ice Skating School, directed by Svetlana Petrey, while more than 275 adults play in three leagues and an introductory adult skating class has a waiting list. Children 4 to 8 start through a Learn to Play program run with the Dallas Stars.
