Built by the City of Ames and Iowa State, opened in 2001

Ames/ISU Ice Arena opened in 2001, built jointly by the City of Ames and Iowa State University, which still own and operate it together. The name is older than the building: in 1996 the city and ISU commissioned an assessment of the earlier Ames/ISU Arena, a single-sheet rink then more than 20 years old that had been put together with volunteer help and used parts from a Chicago rink. Its regulars at the time were the Cyclone varsity and junior varsity hockey teams, Ames Parks and Recreation and the Ames Minor Hockey League.

The current building is a 44,454-square-foot arena with one NHL-regulation sheet, eight locker rooms and room for about 1,000 spectators, and it was designed to allow for a later expansion. It is home ice for the Iowa State Cyclones men's and women's hockey teams and the ISU Synchronized Skating Team, and the Ames Figure Skating Club skates here. Local high school teams play here too, and the arena hosts the MHSHL championship tournament each spring.

Each summer the arena hosts the USA Hockey Central District High Performance camp, a week of games for top players aged 14 and under from across the Midwest. Off the ice, a 2019 project replaced about 6,000 square feet of flooring, with a new base along the dasherboards.
