Built in 1996 as H.O. Bouchard Arena

Penobscot Ice Arena was built in 1996 by Lou and Caryle Janicki as H.O. Bouchard Arena. They owned it until 2001, when Roger Theriault's Delta Hockey bought it, and by 2009 it had been renamed the T.J. Ryan Center.

George and Linda Bishop bought the arena in late September 2013 and renovated it at once. They rebuilt the locker rooms, added a girls' locker room and bathroom, and later put in a used set of boards with tempered glass in place of the old plexiglass, along with an Olympia ice machine. The warm room gained an electric fireplace and games, and the Crossbar Cafe sells snacks and hot drinks. The ice stays cold: on a December morning in 2013 the rink surface sat between 12 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit and the rest of the arena between 30 and 40.

The arena is home ice for Brewer High School's team, the Witches, and for the Hampden Broncos. In 2013 Brewer Youth Hockey, Maine Freeze travel teams and adult leagues of about 270 skaters also used it, and more than 200,000 people passed through each year.
