Central Oregon's only NHL-sized ice rink, opened 2015
The Pavilion opened in 2015 as the Bend Park and Recreation District's multi-use ice and recreation facility, with Central Oregon's only NHL-sized ice rink. It was financed out of a $29 million bond measure that district voters passed in 2012, the same measure that paid for the Bend Whitewater Park and Deschutes River Trail projects.
Opsis Architecture, based in Portland, nominated The Pavilion for Athletic Business's Facilities of Merit award, and in 2016 it was one of 10 facilities selected internationally. One judge described the contrast between the warm wood roof plane and the cool ice sheet as powerful and poetic.
The Bend Ice Figure Skating Club and the Bend Curling Club both use the sheet. The district's adult curling league plays round-robin games on Sunday afternoons and evenings and takes first-timers as well as experienced curlers. The building's event calendar also includes Pavilion-Palooza and Roller Pride.
