Opened in 1991 by Torvill and Dean

Planet Ice Blackburn, formerly Blackburn Arena, was opened in April 1991 by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. It has an Olympic-size ice pad of 60 by 30 metres and holds 3,200 people. Blackburn Council first owned it before it was sold to the Peel Group, and in December 2015 it passed to Silver Blades.

The Blackburn Hawks, who play here, spent the whole 1990-91 season away from home because the new arena was not yet complete, and their finances improved after a buyout by Peel Holdings, the firm that owned the site. In the 1990s the arena also hosted WCW wrestling in October 1993 and WWF the year after, and Status Quo played its only concert here in November 1994.

The Hawks and the Blackburn Eagles still call the arena home, and an independent junior scheme, the Lancashire Lightning Ice Hockey Academy, runs teams from under 10 to under 18.
