North End rink rebuilt after a 1990s closure

Steriti Memorial Rink was built in 1975 on Boston's North End waterfront and was often used for Bruins practices. It was named when it first opened for Stephan Steriti, the only boy from the North End neighborhood to die in the Vietnam War. Two decades later it was closed because of the building's dilapidated condition.

Funding to renovate the run-down rink was appropriated in 1996, but the $5 million project did not get off the ground until 2001, and the rink reopened in October 2003. Almost everything a skater could see was new: the windows, the roof, a new slab, all new refrigeration and two bocce courts, with the building's framework essentially the only original element left. The rink was rededicated to Steriti at the reopening, and former Bruin Rick Middleton recalled the team's practices there, including sunshine that used to get in the goalies' eyes. The rink is lined with windows overlooking the waterfront.
