Cambridge's state rink on Gore Street, opened in 1970–71 and named for Rev. Romano Simoni.
The Simoni Skating Rink on Gore Street opened as an indoor rink during the winter of 1970–71, named in honor of Rev. Romano Simoni. Its early years were rocky: articles in the Cambridge Chronicle reported that the new state skating facility was not well maintained, and a vandalism-caused fire forced a long shutdown in 1977.
It remains a Commonwealth of Massachusetts public rink overseen by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and FMC Ice Sports has operated it for DCR since 2005.
Cambridge Youth Hockey, the Baystate Skating School and StinkySocks adult hockey skate here, and the rink has also hosted box lacrosse: the Cambridge Nor'easters, who list Simoni Rink as their home, won their league's second title in 2019 by defeating the Denver Mile High Stars. It has been used as well for international exhibition matches, including the first game of a 2019 two-game Friendship Series.
