Opened to the public in October 1980 beside the Phillip pool; home of the CBR Brave
The ice rink opened to the public in October 1980 on the same site as the Phillip pool, with its opening ceremony in May 1981. The site had been leased to Glencora Pty Ltd in 1979, and the lease submission planned an Olympic-size rink; the heat from the rink's refrigeration system is used to warm the surrounding pools.
Today the centre advertises an Olympic-size facility with 1,500 square metres of ice and room for up to 250 skaters, with public sessions every day. It is the home of the CBR Brave in the AIHL and of the Canberra Pirates women's team, and it hosted the Canberra Knights from 1981 to 2014.
It is the older of the two ice rinks in the ACT. In August 2014 the ACT sports minister rejected a proposal to build a second rink beside the planned Molonglo Valley swimming complex, and the ACT Ice Skating Association's events and competitions are still held on this ice.
