Maine's first refrigerated outdoor pond

The Lee Twombly Pond at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth debuted more than 25 years ago as Maine's first and only refrigerated outdoor pond. The Twombly family built it as a gift to the center and to Southern Maine, a permanent tribute to Lee Twombly's love of skating and of giving to others.

Lee Francis Twombly, born on March 9, 1959, grew up in Falmouth skating and playing hockey on local ponds. At 14 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and could not walk after surgery; a plaque in the Family Ice Center lobby tells his story, and Falmouth Middle School gives a Lee Twombly Memorial Award in his honor.

In late fall 2022 the pond could not open because its infrastructure was failing, so the non-profit center launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild it. Donors paid for a new surface and refrigeration system, and the pond reopened for the 2023-24 season.
