A non-profit rink and recreation center in Rockport, open since 2001
By the late 1990s the idea of a local indoor hockey rink had been discussed for nearly 20 years, pursued, dropped and all but forgotten. A small group of local families took it up again and created what is now Midcoast Rec, which opened its doors in 2001.
It runs as a non-profit with no general membership fees, and offers reduced fees and scholarships to anyone in need. Since the rink and tennis courts first opened, the programs have grown, and the center counts over 30,000 program participants a year.
Its guiding mission since opening day has been a positive environment for all members of the community, and it is open to the public with no membership required. Hundreds of children under eight learn to play tennis and ice hockey each year for free or at reduced rates.
