Opened in July 2012 on the site of the Kennebec Ice Arena, whose roof collapsed under snow in 2011.
The Ice Vault stands on the site of the Kennebec Ice Arena, which was built in 1973 and collapsed under the weight of snow on March 2, 2011. Ground was broken for the new arena on February 16, 2012, and it opened on July 7, 2012, at a cost of $4 million.
The arena holds 536 spectators, plus a standing platform on the mezzanine. The Maine Moose, a junior hockey team founded in 2006 by local businessmen Steve Levesque and Tom McBrierty, played their first home game in the new building against the New York Aviators on October 19, 2012.
Today the Ice Vault runs youth hockey, adult leagues, figure skating, learn-to-skate programs, pickup shinny and skills clinics for skaters of every age and ability.
