Two NHL-size sheets in North Charleston, opened in 1997 as the South Carolina Stingrays' practice rink
The Carolina Ice Palace opened in 1997, built by the Zucker family as the training facility for the South Carolina Stingrays. Anita Zucker still owns the rink and holds a part share in the Stingrays, and the ECHL club continues to use the building as its practice facility and backup arena.
The building holds two NHL-size ice rinks. By its tenth anniversary in 2007 the rink counted the Figure Skating Club of Charleston, the Charleston Youth Hockey Association, Citadel Bulldogs Hockey, adult hockey leagues and Lowcountry high school hockey among its home associations, and the Charleston Curling Club now curls here as well. On fall and winter Saturday mornings, figure skaters take lessons on one sheet while young hockey players and their parents stream in and out on the other side of the building.
The rink has hosted the 2003 USA Hockey Tier II Pee Wee National Championship, the 2005 South Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships, a Buffalo Sabres training camp and Senator John McCain's 2000 town hall meeting, and it was Olympic champion Tara Lipinski's official South Carolina rink. In April 2011 a Stingrays alumni game here drew a capacity crowd of more than 700.
