Eau Claire's city rink since 1975
Hobbs Municipal Ice Arena was built in 1974 with an initial donation from the Hobbs Foundation and has been open to the public since 1975. Its main rink is the Richard O'Brien Rink, named for the man who was the driving force behind the community effort to build it.
The 93,000-square-foot city building holds two full-size sheets and a smaller studio sheet. It is the home rink of UW–Eau Claire's NCAA Division III men's and women's hockey teams, the boys' teams of Eau Claire North and Memorial high schools, the ECA Stars girls' high school team, the Eau Claire Youth Hockey Association and the Eau Claire Figure Skating Club. All of them sit on the Hobbs Ice Arena consortium, which gives input on the arena's future, and UW–Eau Claire's club hockey team plays here too.
The arena's biggest change was its expansion. In 2008, UW–Eau Claire students and the university's foundation committed money to the project, and the addition built for the university's hockey program was named the Blugold Pavilion in honor of the students' generosity. The $5.6 million renovation, completed in early 2010, added the third rink, more seating, locker rooms, a training room, offices and new lighting.
