Christchurch's only ice rink, skating since 1985

Christchurch skaters used the Centaurus Road rink in Cashmere until it closed in 1983, and The Big Apple, a modern international-sized rink on Brougham Street, opened after it. That rink became Alpine Ice in 1985, and the centre has since lived through the roof collapse in the 1992 snowstorm and several rebuilds and upgrades.

It is Christchurch's only ice rink and the home of local speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey clubs. The Canterbury Alpine Ice Speed Skating Club trains on a 111 metre short-track oval, the Centaurus Ice Skating Club and Canterbury Masters Figure Skating Club skate here, and the Canterbury Ice Hockey Association runs hockey, with the Infernos and Red Devils as home teams.

The centre also runs Learn to Skate classes that follow the Kiwi Skate programme, with badges to earn and fun competitions to enter, and the Canterbury Ice Hockey Association offers Learn to Play hockey sessions during school terms for children and adults.
