Home ice for Texas A&M hockey
Spirit Ice Arena started as Arctic Wolf Ice Center, a rink the City of College Station constructed together with private investors. In 2012 a private investor purchased the rink and changed its name to Spirit Ice Arena.
Texas A&M Ice Hockey calls the building home. The team traces itself to 1982, when a group of students put together a squad and played games for fun rather than competitively, and it became an official Sport Club with the Department of Recreational Sports in 2001. In 2016 the Aggies were one of the original teams in the newly founded Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference, finishing second and earning a first-round spot in the inaugural playoffs.
Junior hockey shares the ice. The NA3HL's College Station Spirit, which played from 2016 to 2019, became the Texas RoadRunners, a North American Tier III Hockey League South Division team whose home ice is Spirit Ice Arena and which is affiliated with the NAHL's Odessa Jackalopes. Youth hockey runs through the Brazos Valley Hockey Club, the arena's partner, and the Texas Outlaws Hockey Organization fields 12U and 14U tournament teams here. Parents watch from stands kept at a comfortable 55 degrees.
