Opened in 2000 as the Cranbrook RecPlex
Western Financial Place opened on October 13, 2000, as the Cranbrook RecPlex, a complex that puts a lap and wave pool and racquet ball and squash courts under the same roof as the ice rink. It took its present name in August 2012 from its new sponsor, Western Financial Group, and was then described as the largest sports and entertainment venue in the Kootenays.
The Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League were the rink's best-known tenant. The franchise played its first game and first win in Cranbrook on September 25, 1998, at the Cranbrook Memorial Arena, and its final game and final win here on March 17, 2019, against the Red Deer Rebels. The WHL had announced earlier that year that the team would move to Winnipeg after 20 seasons in Cranbrook.
The Cranbrook Bucks replaced the Ice as the building's main tenant. The BCHL awarded the city an expansion franchise on October 8, 2019, to begin play during the 2020-21 season, and the Bucks play their home games at Western Financial Place.
