Town-owned rink beside the Nordic Center, on the site of an old coal mine
Currently out of season The CB Nordic page, which describes the Town of Crested Butte's rink, still says the rink is closed for the 25/26 season; open skate times are set by the Town and no 2026/27 dates are posted yet. Official schedule update
The Big Mine Ice Arena sits in a corner of Crested Butte that was once home to a high-grade bituminous coal mine lined with coke ovens. The Town of Crested Butte owns and operates the rink beside the Nordic Center, where CB Nordic staffs the warming house.
Organized ice began in the 1990s, when the space started its transition as a regional hub. A modest ice sheet with plywood dasher boards was made for the valley's early organized hockey programs and kept up with a rigged Zamboni, and the warming house followed shortly after.
The transformation into the Big Mine Ice Arena began in 2011 and stands as the largest public recreation project in Crested Butte's history, a 1.3-million-dollar effort that drew on state and national funding. Met Rec, a local recreation funder, made four contributions, the latest a 2020 award for heated changing rooms for the valley's youth and adult hockey programs.
