Opened November 24, 2023, after more than 15 years of outdoor ice
LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes opened to the public on Friday, November 24, 2023, after the Town of Mammoth Lakes had spent more than 20 years searching for a permanent home for an indoor rink. For over 15 years before that the town ran an outdoor rink, where abundant snow, relentless sun and soaring spring temperatures made a quality ice sheet extremely difficult to maintain.
The ice sits inside the Community Recreation Center, a 40,000-square-foot Sprung Performance Arena that the town chose for its affordability, reduced operating and energy expenses and green footprint. Ground was broken on April 21, 2021, with the Mammoth Stars on hand alongside the Town Council and its commissions. On December 7, 2022, the town, Mammoth Lakes Tourism and Mammoth Lakes Recreation launched a community-driven partnership with the NHL's LA Kings.
The rink is home to Mammoth Lakes Youth Hockey and the Mammoth Stars, and the schedule runs open skate, power skating classes, adult coed hockey leagues and pick-up sessions. During the summer months the rink is transformed into the Mammoth RecZone, a three-court gymnasium used for the Parks and Recreation Department's summer camps and programs.
