An NHL-size rink in the Coliseum's old Equestrian Centre

The ice at the El Paso County Events Center came with the El Paso Buzzards, an original member of the Western Professional Hockey League in 1996: Rich Szturm was brought in to run ice operations and start a youth hockey program by converting the on-site Equestrian Centre into a full-time NHL-sized rink. The Coliseum itself is older, opened on May 21, 1942 and designed by Percy McGhee to host a rodeo and livestock show.

The Events Center seats 2,800 around a regulation-size sheet. It is home to the El Paso Rhinos junior team, which won Thorne Cup championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19 in the Western States Hockey League before joining the North American Hockey League for the 2021-22 season. The El Paso Hockey Association, the Sun City's only ice hockey organization, has grown since 2001 to cover youth, high school, junior and adult hockey and figure skating for more than 600 participants, and its El Paso Figure Skating Club hosted the 2021 and 2022 District 11 Championships.

Gaping holes in the roof once meant no ice when the mercury climbed, and out-of-date lightbulbs wreaked havoc on the playing surface. In 2020 El Paso won Kraft Hockeyville USA, and the prize paid for LED lighting and roof repairs that let the building keep summer ice for the first time.
