A 1970s Saint-Pierre arena named for NHL player Martin Lapointe, closed in 2021 and rebuilding for 2026-27
Skating temporarily paused The arena is closed for renovation. The City expects a return for the 2026–27 season but has not announced a reopening date. Official schedule update
Aréna Martin-Lapointe is a 1970s arena in the Saint-Pierre district of Lachine, named for Martin Lapointe, a former National Hockey League player. Lapointe said he was honoured to see his name on the arena of the neighbourhood where he grew up. The building was designed for a range of ice sports, and it has hosted the Montreal Canadiens when the Bell Centre was unavailable.
The arena closed in 2021 because of the risk of a leak in its refrigeration system, which ran entirely on ammonia. In September 2024 the City of Montréal and the Government of Québec announced the start of an upgrade to bring the building to current standards, with construction to run into 2026. Repointing the brickwork means the murals on the outside walls are coming off; the project includes new murals inside and out, and in August 2025 the city opened a competition to design the exterior work.
As of September 2026 the work is still under way, and the borough of Lachine plans to reopen the arena for the 2026-2027 season. Reopening would bring back public skating for the neighbourhood along with the activities of Hockey Lachine and the Club de patinage artistique de Lachine.
