One of Canada's oldest active arenas

The Auditorium de Verdun was inaugurated in 1938, but hockey did not arrive until 1946, when the building first opened its doors to the game. It is one of the oldest arenas still active in Canada. The Memorial Cup tournament was played here in 1979, and on January 22, 2008, the QMJHL announced the return of junior hockey to the Auditorium.

The complex holds two ice sheets: the Denis Savard rink and the Scotty Bowman rink, the latter with seating for more than 3,000, which makes this the third-largest arena on the island of Montreal after the Bell Centre. In 2020 the art deco exterior was restored, and the adjacent Denis-Savard arena was demolished and rebuilt by the architects FABG. That work won the Ordre des architectes du Québec's 2021 award of excellence for heritage enhancement and the 2021 Grand Prix of Opération Patrimoine Montréal.

Since 2022 the Auditorium has also been home to the Alliance de Montréal, a professional basketball team in the CEBL, and the Foo Fighters played the building on July 10, 2023. The City of Montreal has since announced a CA$6.8 million investment in the Auditorium's mechanical systems to maintain the heritage asset. Between tenants and concerts, the ice is scheduled for public skating, free hockey and stick-and-puck sessions.
