Hybrid wood-and-steel arena opened September 29, 2012, municipally owned and run by the Chelsea Foundation
The Meredith Centre officially opened on September 29, 2012, on a site next to Chelsea Elementary School. The Chelsea Foundation, a non-profit focused on community recreation, led the fundraising: in 2009 it secured roughly CA$6 million in matching provincial and federal grants, with the municipality covering a third of the cost, and a 2010 community capital campaign raised more toward construction.
The arena is a hybrid wood-and-steel structure with a roof span of 33.9 metres (111 feet), and it shares the building with a fitness centre, meeting rooms and a banquet hall. On the ice, the centre runs its own Centre Meredith Hockey Development Program and Learn to Skate sessions, and the public schedule adds pick-up hockey and open figure skating alongside public skating.
The building is municipally owned but has been managed by the Chelsea Foundation since it opened in 2012. In the winter of 2013, only months after opening, the centre hosted and housed the Nishiyuu walkers.
