From a 1938 columnist's plea to the 1975 opening and the 50th-anniversary naming of Aréna Denis-Paul
Louiseville first heard the call for an arena in 1938, when a local columnist wrote that having one was a must. In 1949 the papers reported plans for a fireproof hall for 4,000 people with artificial ice, and in 1968, at the Optimist Club's request, the town and the neighbouring parish created a study commission. One early idea set the arena on rue St-Louis, in front of the O.T.J. grounds.
The building finally rose in 1974. Its architect, Marcel Lord of Trois-Rivières, first put the cost above 350,000, then at 581,000, and the final bill passed 1,100,000. It opened unofficially on 21 December 1974, with Louiseville minor hockey and the Optimist figure-skating club as its first tenants, and was inaugurated on 22 March 1975 before about 250 guests, the mayor noting that more than 70,000 people had already gone through the turnstiles.
The town marked the arena's 50th anniversary with a QMJHL pre-season game between the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and the Shawinigan Cataractes on 14 September 2024, and used the occasion to rename it Aréna Denis-Paul.
