A 400-metre club track with a marathon history

The ice club of Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord was founded on 27 December 1896, because villagers thought it important that there was somewhere to skate. The first rink was watered through a ring main laid round the track, with fire hoses connected to it. When the land was sold to the municipality in 1957 for an industrial estate, the rink moved to Sportpark Veenoord, where the cinder track served speedway in summer and skating in winter.

On 9 January 1986 the ice masters worked all night, pulling water out of the canal with slurry tankers to give the track a good layer of ice for the first Marathon on Natural Ice. For years the club was the fastest at preparing the track for that marathon, which brought it national fame. In 1987 the club organised the first national marathon championship on the Ermerstrand, and in 2012 the championship was skated on the Grote Rietplas in Emmen.

In 2023 the old cinder track was replaced by an asphalt track with a spraying system, so that Veenoord is back in the race for a fast ice floor. Since the 2023/2024 season the club has a new 400-metre track and a scribble rink for the smallest skaters.
