Lane County's old horse arena, turned ice rink in 1989

The Rink Exchange opened as Lane County Ice Arena on December 22, 1989, in the old horse arena at the Lane County fairgrounds, after a community campaign convinced the County Commissioners and the Fair Board that an ice arena there could work. Tonya Harding, then the Northwest's top figure skating competitor, headlined the grand opening exhibition.

The name dates from 2010, when the County, facing budget cuts, decided it no longer wanted to finance the rink directly. The Eugene Generals, a junior hockey team that had played there since 2005, agreed to operate it while the building stayed public property. They began with public sessions and the pro shop, named for a military-base exchange, and by June 2011 they ran the whole facility in partnership with the County.

The Eugene Figure Skating Club hosted the Pacific Coast Sectionals Synchronized Skating Competition here in 1994 and again in 2000, and the Lane Amateur Hockey Association has been a mainstay from the start. Public sessions have routinely drawn 150 or more skaters, and over 200 at Christmas.
