Gillette's county-run rink at Cam-Plex, opened November 8, 2008
Spirit Hall Ice Arena opened on November 8, 2008, at the east end of the Wyoming Center at Cam-Plex. In its first year the ice was the best the former arena director had ever seen it, until it all melted overnight when the machine went down. Staff and the workers installing the ice machines scrambled to have a new sheet ready for the grand opening.
The rink is a full NHL-size sheet, 200 by 85 feet. Each fall a crew lays the lines, faceoff circles and goal creases onto ice only an eighth of an inch thick. A decade ago that painting took days by hand; now it takes less than half a morning, with large pieces done as mesh logos, such as the Wild hockey logo bought by the Gillette Hockey Association. The arena is open from October through mid-April.
