A volunteer-run Olympic-sized rink, the first New Zealand building to pair a rink with a pool
Gore's ice rink was built as the first stage of the Gore Multisports Complex, a $10.5 million project funded entirely from community sources and planned in three stages. The complex was the first building in New Zealand to combine an ice rink and an aquatic centre, using the rejected heat from making the ice to warm the pool water.
The first stage, an Olympic-sized ice rink, was completed over a five month construction period. It brought immediate growth of around 50% in seasonal patronage for Ice Sports Southland, the body established to oversee the fundraising and building of a new rink in Gore. By 2024 a volunteer who began helping at the former ice rink on Hokonui Drive had been involved for more than 20 years.
The rink is unusual among New Zealand's year-round indoor rinks, which are in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Gore and Queenstown, because it is entirely owned and operated by its voluntary club members. In 2020 the Gore ice hockey club had two senior teams, the Gore Grizzlies and the Gore TNC, in the Senior Non-Checking League against teams from Tekapo, Dunedin, Queenstown and Alexandra, plus an under-15 team and a weekly learn to play session.
